Salmonella Scare Brings Salad Recall In 12 States, Including Florida
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The California packager of a bagged salad mix is staging a voluntary recall, saying the salad could possibly be contaminated with the Salmonella bacteria. The affected salad was shipped to 9 states, including Florida.
Taylor Farms Retail of California is recalling 3,265 cases of salads following a random test on a finished package of spinach by the Washington State Department of Agriculture, the FDA said. The pre-packaged salad products were distributed in Florida, Arizona, California, Colorado, Kentucky, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Puerto Rico and sold in supermarkets, the FDA said.
The recall affects several salad blends under the brands Fresh Selections, H-E-B, Marketside, and Taylor Farms. The products have "best by" dates of between October 18 and 21.
It was not immediately known if any of the salad products are sold by South Florida markets.
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people may experience fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea that may be bloody. So far, no cases of illness have been reported.
Anyone who believes they have a bag of the recalled salad should stop eating it immediately, and either destroy it or return it to the store for a refund.
