S. Florida School Choir Selected For 2012 Olympics
WEST KENDALL (CBS4)-The 2012 summer Olympic will soon approach, and a West Kendall high school choir will put South Florida on the map when they perform at the games in London.
With a snap and swanky step, the Falcon Singers are serenading their way to the Olympics, which will be held from July 27, 2012 to August 12, 2012.
"I think it's a once in a lifetime opportunity," said Ryan Ellis who is the Choir Director at John A. Ferguson Senior High School in West Kendall. "I think it's the type of opportunity that can change you for the rest of your life."
It all started when Ellis submitted a demo tape for John A. Ferguson High back in February with three songs in three different languages.
"I was completely astonished when I heard we made it to perform in the Olympics," said Kevin Dorta, who is a senor at the school and a member of the Falcon Singers.
This year alone the chorus has mastered music in nine different languages.
"One thing we've always tried to do here at Ferguson is incorporate the music of different languages, different cultures and different religions," said Ellis.
It's paid off and students say they think it has set them apart from the rest. The Falcon Singers were one of the first coral groups selected nationwide to perform at the summer games in London.
"We pick up on things really quick and we learn really fast," said Dorta. "We get it done."
Forty students and 10 chaperons will travel to London for the games. The Falcon Singer's could perform up to 15 times for athletes and spectators during their time in London.
But to get there, the group must fund raise $250,000 to make their Olympic dream a reality.
