S. Florida-Bound Giant Ship Clears Bridge Obstacle
KORSOER, Denmark (CBS4) - The sister ship of the Ft. Lauderdale-based Oasis of the Seas has narrowly passed under a Danish bridge on her way to join the Oasis in South Florida, a feat that has required smooth seas and adjustable smokestacks.
Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas is a twin to the Oasis of the Seas, which made the same narrow squeeze under the Great Belt Fixed Link a year ago.
The bridge is only one foot taller than the cruise liner after its telescopic smokestacks are lowered. The ship spans almost four football fields and accommodates 8,000 people.
Officials at Denmark's Korsoer Naval Station said the Allure of the Seas made the passage mid-afternoon Saturday Denmark time. The Oasis made a spectacular crossing in darkness.
It left the shipyard in Finland on Friday and is expected to arrive in Fort Lauderdale November 11th, where it will operate cruises from it's home port, Port Everglades.
A series of events are planned for the ship's arrival, which is likely to make Port Everglades the cruise ship capital of the world based on volume.
