S. Fla. Surfers "Hang Ten" In Sandy's Rough Waves
HAULOVER BEACH (CBSMiami) – Despite double red flags flying at Haulover Beach, warning beachgoers to stay out of the warning, plenty of surfers have taken to the rough seas to take advantage of the rare high surf.
Surfers with leashes and body boarders with fins are being allowed to attempt the dangerous surf.
But for some, it was too much.
"The currents will pull you all the way down, back to Pompano," said surfer Adam Downs. He was the first surfer in the water near the Deerfield Beach Fishing Pier Friday morning and was back out ten minutes later.
For Mike Donnelly, surfing conditions proved dangerous as well.
"About half way out, too big of a swell, couldn't really go under, and the board came up and hit me in the head," said Donnelly.
In video from Chopper 4, the water was dotted with dozens of surfers who are taking advantage of waves produced by the outer bands of Hurricane Sandy.
