S. Fla. Non-Profit In Dire Need Of Toys For Donation
MIAMI (CBS4) - A South Florida group is looking for help tonight to make sure needy children get at least one toy this weekend. The group's annual give-away helps hundreds of kids, but without your help, they may have to cancel the whole thing.
When Derrick Moore, Kernique Baton, and Tiffanie Dock started collecting toys, they thought they'd have enough for 250 needy children this Christmas Eve. They hardly have any.
"This is all we have. It's kind of sad. It saddens us, man. This is our biggest event," said Moore.
Their organization, the Sankofa Society, has been giving away hundreds of toys for two years in South Florida, but this year, they are running low on donated toys. Very low.
While hundreds of needy families have already registered for Saturday's toy giveaway, the group only has a few dozen to give away.
"This is the point where we have a lot of kids within the community, who might not receive a toy on christmas," said Moore.
"It's really sad, that, that's all we have," said Cook.
And it's not just toys. The organization uses the event to teach kids about reading and using the local library,
"And when they come in, they take a tour, we sign them up for library cards, and we show them all the things the library has," said Baton.
But, if they don't have enough toys to give away, the organization may have to cancel the event.
