S. Fla. Man Seeks Bail In Alleged Terror Plot
MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — One of two Oakland Park brothers accused of having ties to terrorism is seeking release on bail.
A hearing was set Tuesday in Miami federal court for 30-year-old Sheheryar Alam Qazi, who has been in custody since his November arrest.
He and his younger brother, 20-year-old Raees Alam Qazi, are charged with plotting to detonate explosives in New York City.
Raees Alam Qazi, the younger of the two, is not seeking release on bail.
The men have pleaded not guilty to attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and conspiring to provide material support to terrorists.
Evidence indicates that the younger Qazi was much more active than his brother in an alleged plot to set off bombs in New York, including researching bomb-making techniques on the Internet.
Prosecutors said the two are naturalized U.S. citizens originally from Pakistan, but lived in South Florida for years prior to their arrests.
Prosecutors say the men sought to avenge deaths caused by U.S. drones in Afghanistan.
