S. Fla. Landmark Due For A Makeover
HALLANDALE BEACH (CBS4) – The Hallandale Beach City Commission will meet Wednesday afternoon to discuss the possible makeover of its famous "beach ball" water tower.
According to CBS4 News partner The Miami Herald, the city plans to spend about $300,000 for the water tower makeover including a fresh coat of paint.
When it's done, the water tower, located on the beach near Hallandale Beach Boulevard, will still look like a beach ball only with brighter hues of blue, aqua and red.
Commissioners are also considering tearing down the city's other water tower, located at Bluesten Park, and replacing it with a tower that could be used for cellular antennas. The Bluesten Park tower, which is about 50 years old, has not been painted in 15 years. It would cost the city more to fix and maintain the tower than it would to tear it down.
The city engineering staff will present a report to commissioners Wednesday explaining that the old tower is not needed to maintain the city's water pressure. The 135-foot "Beach Ball'' is needed.
The colorful tower, which is about 30 years old, went through major repairs and the original beach ball paint job in the early 1990s. It quickly became a landmark for the city.
