Rubio Prepared To Shut Down Gov't And Default On Debt Over Obamacare
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Senator Marco Rubio is prepared to shut down the United States government if the Affordable Care Act isn't completely defunded by any short-term budget agreement.
"I will not vote for a continuing resolution unless it defends Obamacare," Rubio told a Florida group Thursday. "I believe we should not vote or pass a continuing resolution unless that continuing resolution defunds Obamacare."
Rubio's statement is in line with the feelings of the most conservative members of the House of Representatives which has spent more than $50 million to vote more than 30 times to repeal the Affordable Care Act, each vote has been nothing more than symbolic.
In addition, Rubio said that he will not support raising the national debt by "one single cent" unless the Senate and White House agree to the balanced budget the House approved with draconian cuts to most social services.
However, the debt ceiling is not for new spending, it's to pay bills that Congress has already incurred from previous spending bills, many of which Senator Rubio has voted to enact.
Rubio also said the debt is discouraging growth in American business and is not helped by tax increases. The deficit has dropped this year by almost record levels thanks to a combination of spending cuts and tax increases included in the sequestration and the fiscal cliff deal earlier this year.
Ironically, repealing the Affordable Care Act would add billions to the national debt.
