Rubio Draws Scorn Of Bloomberg Gun Group
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Florida Senator Marco Rubio was vocal in his opposition to any new gun control measures and voted against the expanded background check amendment earlier this week. That vote has now drawn the scorn of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's Mayors Against Illegal Guns group.
According to the Miami Herald, the local leader of that group, Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner said of Rubio's move, "Your position and your vote yesterday put you on shaky ground with 94 percent of Floridians. You are a coward Senator Rubio. You are afraid to stand up to the gun lobby and to stand up for your constituents. Instead you stood up for the NRA. Shame on you."
The expanded background measures polled nationally around 90 percent support, which is almost unheard of for any potential legislation from the federal government.
Rubio repeatedly said the expanded background checks don't work and that closing the gun show loophole isn't needed. Rubio also said several times that new laws weren't needed because the criminals don't respect the laws.
Democrats pointed out the problem with that logic, which was routinely used by the National Rifle Association and gun supporters, is that if that is indeed the case, then why are laws needed against drugs, murder, and other crimes if criminals don't care about the law anyway.
According to the Herald, the mayors group has bought some advertising in Orlando and Tampa but hasn't said if it will spend significant money to beat Rubio in a statewide election or if he chooses to run for president in 2016.
