Rothstein, McAdoo No Longer Heat Assistant Coaches
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – An eventful offseason for the Miami Heat took another dramatic turn when reports surfaced about the team reassigning two of their longest-tenured assistant coaches.
According to Yahoo Sports, Ron Rothstein and Bob McAdoo will no longer be coaching from the Miami Heat bench. The move makes room for former Heat forward Juwan Howard to join coach Erik Spoelstra's bench staff, a nice promotion from his role in player development.
While it's unknown what roles the Heat will find for Rothstein and McAdoo, they are both expected to continue working with the team in some capacity, according to Yahoo.
Both men have played significant parts in the evolution of the Heat franchise as well as being long-standing members of professional basketball.
Rothstein, 71, has been with the Heat since the beginning. He was the franchise's first head coach and held that job for three years before being replaced by Kevin Loughery. Rothstein became known for his defensive coaching tactics and was a key member of the Detroit Pistons coaching staff under Chuck Daly.
He re-joined the franchise in 2000 when he became the head coach of the Heat-affiliated Miami Sol of the WNBA. Rothstein has spent the last 11 seasons as a Heat assistant coach under San Van Gundy, Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra.
McAdoo, 62, is an NBA Hall of Famer that has had a strong relationship with Riley since their years together winning championships with the Los Angeles Lakers. He's spent the past 20 seasons on the Heat bench as an assistant coach.
