Ross Donates $200 Million To Univ. Of Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (CBSMiami/AP) - Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross will give his alma mater, the University of Michigan, $200 million for its business school and athletics programs.
The donation, according to the University of Michigan, is the largest single donation in the school's history. The school said the donation would "significantly transform the student experience at the business school and athletic campus."
When the $200 million is fully donated, Ross will have given UM roughly $313 million. The school of business is already named after Ross and the Athletic Campus is also expected to be named after the Fins' owner.
Not all in South Florida are behind Ross' donation.
Political reporter Marc Caputo of CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald questioned the gift, saying on the Herald's political blog:
"It's an interesting twist on a guy who called the stadium renovations his "gift" to Miami-Dade. But when it came time for giving, the stadium wasn't his priority in the end. But it's not like Ross isn't spending extra money in Miami. He is. He is financing a political group that's sending out attack mailers against lawmakers who scuttled his stadium plans.
Still, while Ross may not have self-financed the stadium renovation, he is pouring money into the team.
Ross has spent more than $200 million on player contracts during the current calendar year as he tries to give South Florida a winner on the football field.
