Man killed, woman hurt in wrong way wreck on Florida Turnpike
MIAMI - A man was killed and a woman was seriously injured in a wrong-way wreck on the Florida Turnpike early Thursday morning in southern Broward County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, just before 2 a.m. they received word of the crash in the northbound lanes just east of NW 57 Avenue/Red Road. The agency said the true travel direction in that section of the highway is east-west.
A woman driving a Honda Element was heading west in the eastbound lanes when she hit a Honda Civic head-on, according to the FHP.
The impact of the collision sent the Honda Element in a northwesterly direction. It slammed into a concrete barrier and rolled over, trapping the driver, a 55-year-old woman from Hialeah, inside. She was extricated by Miramar Fire Rescue and taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.
The Honda Civic was sent spinning in a southeasterly direction, coming to rest in the outside and merge lanes of the Turnpike. Its driver, a 23-year-old man from Cutler Bay, died.
The northbound lanes of the Turnpike were closed for hours so that the vehicles could be removed and an accident investigation conducted. They reopened shortly before 9 a.m.
