Officer & Robbery Suspect Hurt In Confrontation

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - A Ft. Lauderdale police officer was hurt Tuesday night taking two men suspected of an armed robbery in custody.

Ft. Lauderdale police said around 10:20 p.m. they received a call that two armed men had committed a robbery in the 800 block of NW 13th Street.

Police traced the suspects' vehicle to an apartment complex, just a few blocks away, in the 18-hundred block of NW 3rd Terrace where they confronted the suspects.

"I was asleep and heard gunshots and I came out and police cars were all around here," said George Hensley, the apartment building manager.

According to witnesses, shots were fired.

"I heard between six and eight, they were real rapid," Hensley told CBS4's Christina Puig.

Police say an officer discharged his weapon when they tried to arrest the two suspects. One officer and one of the suspects did sustain injuries, but both are believed to be okay.

"One police officer was injured when he climbed the fence and cut his hand or something," according to Hensley.

Hours after the shooting, a bloody stain in the parking lot marks the spot where one of the suspects was injured, yet it is still unclear if the blood came from a gunshot wound. Police have declined to say if the robbery suspect was shot by the officer.

"Just where my friend is standing, they had pinned down a guy, hand-cuffed him, one police man was kicking him and then the dog was biting him," described witness Fred Perez.

Police have not released the names of the injured officer or the robbery suspects.
