Rip Currents Expected Through Holiday Weekend
SOUTH FLORIDA (CBSMiami) - Beach-going is a popular past-time on Memorial Day weekend but, according to the National Weather Service, swimmers should be aware of rip currents.
NOAA reports that moderate to strong rip currents are expected along South Florida's east coast beaches throughout the holiday weekend.
Rip currents will become stronger through the day Sunday because of onshore winds and 1-3 foot surf.
A rip current is a narrow powerful current which runs perpendicular to the beach, out into the ocean. These currents may extend 200 to 2,500 feet lengthwise, but they are typically less than 30 feet wide. Rip currents can often move at more than 5 miles per hour or faster.
Swimmers should exercise caution and be aware of rip currents.
