Eye Of Tropical Storm Rina Passing West Of Cozumel
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The center of Tropical Storm Rina is just west of the resort town of Cozumel, Mexico.
At 11 p.m., the center of Rina was about 20 miles west of Cozumel as it moved to the north at 7 miles per hour.
Rina's maximum sustained winds have dropped to 60 mph; tropical storm force winds extend outward 70 miles from it's center.
CBS4 meteorologist Craig Setzer said upper level wind shear took toll on Rina. The result of the shear will be for the storm to basically be pulled apart with the wind and low-level swirl left behind between Cuba and the Yucatan Penisula.
Rina's moisture, however, will be carried toward Florida.
Rina is expected to take a gradual turn toward east and slow down a bit on Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center.
On that forecast track, the center of Rina will move near or over the northeastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula Thursday through Friday.
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the north and east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula from Punta Allen to San Felipe.
Rina is expected to produce rainfall amounts of up to six inches over the eastern Yucatan Peninsula and Cozumel through Friday. Some areas could see up to 10 inches of rain.
A dangerous storm surge is expected to raise water levels 1-2 feet above normal tide level along the coast.
