BUFFALO, N.Y. (CBSMiami) -- One of sports' most storied rivalries will have some extra fuel in the two matchups between the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills this season.
When Miami signed DE Mario Williams to a two-year, $17 million deal in March, it signaled truth to the rumors that the former #1 overall pick in 2006 was unhappy with his role in Rex Ryan's defense as a 3-4 outside linebacker in Buffalo, rather than his traditional role as a 4-3 pass rusher.
Williams was assigned to drop into coverage far more than he was comfortable with and eventually, that frustration came out and included critiques that Williams didn't put forth his best effort.
With the Williams chapter now in Buffalo's past, Ryan let loose about his former player on MMQB and his signing with the team's rival.
"Now look, with some of the comments [he made], do I wish him well? Not really. But, he's on Miami. If he would have gone somewhere else, maybe. He's a good kid, but I am used to some mean motherfu--ers that play out there. The Terrell Suggs, Jarrett Johnsons of the world. I screwed them, too; I had them drop [into coverage], too. Not one of them bitched. Von Miller [dropped into coverage] in the Super Bowl. Why? Because that's what's asked of him; that's what his job is. Your job is to play. Coaches spend a hell of a lot more time studying tape and everything else."
Williams, who has 96 career sacks in 10 seasons, will now line up on the same defensive line as Ndamukong Suh and Cameron Wake in Miami's 4-3 scheme.
