Reps: Mitt Romney Flying To Convention Tuesday
TAMPA (CBS4/AP) — Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney will fly to Tampa on Tuesday, his campaign announced Monday night.
Gov. Romney will fly from Boston to Florida on the same day his wife Ann is scheduled to deliver her speech to the national convention. Tuesday is the convention's first full day of business.
There has been speculation that Romney will visit the convention hall, but the campaign would confirm only that he was flying to town in time for her speech.
Romney is scheduled to accept the Republican presidential nomination Thursday.
He has been expected to address the American Legion, meeting in Indianapolis, on Wednesday. It was not clear if he would spend Tuesday night in Tampa.
It has been fairly common for would-be nominees to pop in early on their conventions.
President Barack Obama, then the Democratic nominee to be, surprised delegates four years ago by making an early appearance at his convention in Denver.
The Republican convention began Monday, with a perfunctory two-minute session, in light of planners' decision to delay the start of the main program amid the uncertainty of Tropical Storm Isaac.
