Report: UT Meeting With Mack Brown; Saban Yet To Sign Extension At Alabama
AUSTIN, Texas (CBSMiami) – University of Texas football fans may know the future of head coach Mack Brown by the end of the day Friday and that could kick start the Nick Saban to Texas rumors to ludicrous speed.
According to Orangebloods.com's Chip Brown, Brown, school president Bill Powers, and athletic director Steve Patterson are expected to meet late Friday afternoon to talk about the head coach's future with the school. Brown originally reported that Brown would be let go by Texas as early as this week.
It's widely expected that Brown will likely be relieved of his head coaching duties soon as the school has faded into mediocrity in recent years. But the key for Texas if they let Mack Brown go will be can they get the right coach to replace him.
Texas fans, alumni, and boosters feel like there is only one man who can lead the school back to the promised land: Alabama head coach Nick Saban.
Saban is infamous for jumping from job to job over his career, but at 62, may not have many more jumps left in him. But going to Texas would be the pinnacle of any college coach's career, including Saban.
While Saban has built a juggernaut at Alabama, it's still not the Texas Longhorns. The University of Texas job is considered one of the top three in college football and tops even many NFL jobs in terms of prestige.
Money is not considered to be the issue with Texas reportedly willing to pay upwards of $10 million a year to get the right coach into the position. Saban would also have his pick of the best recruits in the country, which Texas produces at a record clip each year.
And a quick rebuilding job by Saban at Texas would give the Longhorns a much easier ticket to the college football playoffs next year than staying at Alabama. Texas has one real opponent when the Longhorns are competing at a high level, Oklahoma.
Given that Oklahoma has tailed off a little in the past few seasons; Saban could be walking into a conference he could run away with in a hurry. In addition, Texas A&M is likely losing Johnny Manziel to the NFL, so the spotlight would turn to Saban and Texas once again.
According to Orangebloods.com, Saban has reportedly starting investigating candidates for a potential coaching staff at Texas. He's also yet to sign a large contract extension Alabama gave him after the season.
Saban could put Alabama fans at ease by signing his contract extension and declaring himself dedicated to finishing his career as head coach of the Crimson Tide. But, where there's smoke, there's usually fire and there's likely going to be a war between Texas and Bama over the coach who's coached multiple national championship teams in recent years.
