Report: Stevie Wonder Boycotting Fla. Until Stand Your Ground Law Repealed
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Stevie Wonder fans in the Sunshine State will have to travel out of state if they want to see the singer perform again.
The legendary artist announced a boycott of Florida Sunday until the state repeals its Stand Your Ground law in the wake of the George Zimmerman verdict, according to the Huffington Post.
"I decided today that until the 'Stand Your Ground' law is abolished in Florida, I will never perform there again," Wonder said in Quebec City according to the Huffington Post.
Wonder took it a step further and said he would refuse to perform in any state or part of the world where a stand your ground law exists.
"The truth is that for those of you who've lost in the battle for justice, wherever that fits in any part of the world; we can't bring them back," Wonder said according to the Huffington Post. "What we can do is we can let our voices be heard. And we can vote in our various countries throughout the world for change and equality for everybody. That's what I know we can do."
Florida's Stand Your Ground law came under immediate scrutiny in the aftermath of the Trayvon Martin shooting at the hands of Zimmerman. Florida loosened its stand your ground laws at the request of gun activists several years ago.
Even though Zimmerman's attorney's did not invoke the stand your ground law in their defense, at least one juror said after the trial that the law did play a role in her decision to find Zimmerman not guilty of second-degree murder or manslaughter.
