Report: Rubio Set To Introduce Abortion Ban
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Florida Senator Marco Rubio angered much of his conservative base by actively pushing bipartisan immigration reform. But now, he may be ready to give political red meat to the voters he alienated by introducing a far-reaching abortion ban in the Senate.
According to the Weekly Standard, Senator Rubio will introduce a federal ban on abortions 20 weeks after conception. Rubio is expected to announce his sponsoring of the bill when Congress returns next week from the July 4th recess.
A similar bill made it through the GOP-controlled House of Representatives last week, but even with Rubio expected to bring it up in the Senate, it's not expected to go anywhere.
Rubio had an amendment rejected earlier this year that would have imposed new penalties for abortions performed on minors outside their home state, according to the Huffington Post.
Rubio's move may not come with much fanfare because of the danger of abortion politics to the Republican Party as it tries to remake its image after the 2012 election failures.
The GOP hasn't weighed in on a similar bill in Texas that failed after a Democratic filibuster in the state Senate.
