Report: Rex Ryan May Welcome Jets Firing Him
NEW YORK (CBSMiami) – The soap opera that is the New York Jets organization took another strange turn Friday when the New York Daily News reported that Rex Ryan said he'd rather be fired if owner Woody Johnson doesn't fix the personnel and coaching issues on offense.
Ryan made a big deal out of hiring former Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano as his offensive coordinator before the season began. Sparano was coming off being fired by the Dolphins for his failure to get the Dolphins moving ahead and poor development of players.
Under Sparano, the Jets are currently ranked 28th out of 32 teams in scoring offense. For the season, the Jets have scored 272 points, or roughly 18.1 points per game. On the flip side, the Jets have given up 347 points, or 23.1 per game. The Jets are also 27th in takeaway/giveaway differential at -13.
According to pro-football-reference.com, the Jets are currently ranked 30th in total yards gained this season at 4,455. The Jets are also ranked 29th in touchdown passes thrown and 28th in interceptions thrown and 30th in team turnovers lost.
The biggest question surrounding the Jets offense outside of Sparano is at the quarterback position. Mark Sanchez has been an abject failure this season, but Ryan has stuck with him throughout the season and his career.
Tim Tebow has been on the bench for the Jets all season, but hasn't been brought in to play quarterback for an extended period of time.
The Jets have no game-changing receivers and the right tackle position was a turnstile to the quarterback for most of the season.
But, Ryan helped build the roster and now he said he'd rather be fired if no offensive overhaul happens. Ryan may get the offensive overhaul and get his wish to be fired as since he is ultimately in charge of the offense, the offensive woes can be at least partially blamed on him.
