Report: Marlins "Aggressively" Looking For New Manager
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Marlins season mercifully came to an end Wednesday night, but the speculation surrounding manager Ozzie Guillen's future remained red hot.
According to ESPN's Buster Olney, "Marlins are aggressively seeking a replacement for Ozzie Guillen. Will they wait to find someone before firing him? We'll see."
Guillen will be the first to admit that this season was a failure and he said the blame lands on himself, the front office, and the players on the field equally. The former White Sox manager was hired with much fanfare last offseason, but his first season with the Marlins was an unmitigated disaster.
The Marlins finished the season nearly 30 games behind the NL East winning Washington Nationals. The team began to be dismantled in July and was a disaster by late July and early August. Guillen's tenure has been rocky in year one.
Guillen's biggest faux pas with some of the fans was when he complimented Fidel Castro in a Time magazine article in the early part of the season. He quickly apologized for his error in a press conference.
But the team, which was put together in the offseason never came together on the field and closer Heath Bell even questioned Guillen's leadership at different points in the season.
But the Marlins may keep Guillen because of financial reasons. Even if the Marlins fired Guillen, they'd still owe him $7.5 million over the next three years. That means any manager the Marlins might be considering hiring will have to be cheap.
