Marlins Sign Closer Heath Bell
MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – Ever since the Miami Marlins lost closing pitcher Juan Carlos Oviedo, a.k.a. Leo Nuñez, they've been in need of a closing pitcher.
So, the Marlins hit the free agent market and found their man in 34-year-old closer Heath Bell.
The Marlins signed Bell to a three-year, $27 million contract to be the team's new closer.
The contract also has a vested option for 2015 worth $9 million, according to FoxSports.com.
The 34-year-old closer has recorded more than 40 saves in each of the last three seasons. Bell has also recorded a sub 3.0 ERA in the past three years.
Bell's services were in demand from several clubs. According to the Post, the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Angels, New York Mets, and Cincinnati Reds are also trying to land Bell.
The Marlins need to add a quality starting pitcher to the rotation and could be in the market for a new shortstop or outfielder.
The Fish have offered contracts to Albert Pujols, Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle, and have met with C.J. Wilson.
