Report: Maddux Not Unanimous Selection To Baseball Hall Of Fame
NEW YORK (CBSMiami) – There's never been a unanimous selection into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. That streak will continue this year as at least one baseball writer chose to not vote for arguably one of the greatest pitchers of all-time, Greg Maddux.
Maddux didn't have an overpowering fastball, but what he didn't necessarily have in terms of top velocity; he more than made up for in being able to locate his pitches with an accuracy not seen in a generation.
Maddux is the only pitcher in MLB history to win at least 15 games for 17 straight seasons and is eighth all-time on the career wins list with 355 total wins. In 1995, Maddux finished with an astounding record of 19-2 and a 1.63 ERA.
The masterful technician won the Cy Young Award four straight seasons from 1992 to 1995 and put up all of his numbers during the Steroid Era of baseball in the 1990's. During his Cy Young years, Maddux put up a 75-29 record with a 1.98 ERA.
He once recorded a complete game against the Chicago Cubs while throwing just 76 pitches in 1997.
Still, despite Maddux's brilliance on the pitching mound, at least one MLB.com writer decided it wasn't enough to make Maddux a unanimous Hall of Fame selection. Ken Gurnick, Dodgers beat writer from MLB.com, announced he didn't vote for Maddux this season, according to CBSSports.com.
Instead, Gurnick voted for Jack Morris and no one else. Morris has a strong case for the Hall of Fame but hasn't been able to get into the Hall for the last few years.
Maddux will still make the hall of fame with ease when the selections are revealed on Wednesday, but he will not be a unanimous selection.
