Jimmy Johnson Elected To College Football Hall Of Fame
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Former University of Miami Hurricanes head football coach Jimmy Johnson has been chosen to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Johnson coached the Hurricanes for five seasons and saw the Canes finish in the top two in three seasons and winning the national championship in 1987. Johnson went on to coach the Dallas Cowboys to multiple Super Bowl victories.
Johnson started his career in 1965 at Louisiana Tech as an assistant coach. He made his name in the 1970's as a defensive line coach and coordinator at Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Pittsburgh. He coached at Oklahoma State until 1983 when he came to the U.
In his first season with UM, Johnson was just 8-5 and saw his team lose in the most dramatic ending in college football history, Doug Flutie's hail Mary pass to Gerald Phelan as time expired in the fourth quarter.
But Johnson built Miami into a national football powerhouse that was feared by most schools across the country. He let players be themselves and built a reputation of being the toughest players in the country.
Johnson coached Miami to one championship and lost a second one to the late Joe Paterno in 1986.
