Report: Jets May Trade Darrelle Revis
NEW YORK (CBSMiami) – The Miami Marlins have defined dysfunctional franchise in baseball for years, but in the NFL the team that is putting the fun in dysfunction lately is the New York Jets.
The Jets have hit the headlines in all of the New York newspapers Thursday after team owner Woody Johnson said he wants to "entertain the possibility" trading the team's best player, cornerback Darrelle Revis. The Pro Bowl cornerback is rehabbing from a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in Miami in a game against the Dolphins.
Head coach Rex Ryan, who could be in a lame duck season, has built his entire defense around Revis and fellow cornerback Antonio Cromartie. Revis has been described by multiple coaches as the best cornerback in pro football for several years.
Revis, 27, is set for unrestricted free agency after next season and the Jets may be ready to move him to get something rather than losing him for nothing. The problem for the Jets with Revis is no one knows how close he will be to the player he was when he returns from his torn ACL.
While Adrian Peterson of the Vikings made a miraculous recovery from his torn ACL and led the league in rushing, no one can predict what Revis' recovery will look like. That will negatively impact his trade value amongst fellow general managers.
Revis carries a salary cap cost of $9 million this season and will carry significant cap hits if he is traded. However, the Jets have little room to wiggle with the salary cap.
The Jets are expected to be upwards of $27 million over the salary cap and have seven players who each count more than $10 million against the cap. Quarterback Mark Sanchez is the second-highest paid on the team with a cap cost of $12.853 million.
Still, Jets coach Rex Ryan has said he doesn't want to trade Revis and that leaves new general manager John Idzik in an awkward position of either placating his owner or his coach. Given the state of the Jets, what Woody wants, Woody will more than likely get.
