Report: Greg Schiano To Take Over Bucs
TAMPA (CBSMiami) – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were left at the altar last week by Oregon coach Chip Kelly, but it looks like the Bucs will reach into the college ranks again to land their head coach.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Bucs are set to hire Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano as the team's next coach.
Schiano would replace Raheem Morris who was fired after another sub-par season in Tampa.
Schiano was reportedly recommended to the Bucs by New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
According to former NFL player Ross Tucker, "everybody that know/has worked with Greg Schiano speaks glowlingly of him."
Kelly was set to bring his high-flying, wide-open offense to Tampa, but he backed out of the deal at the last minute. Schiano is pretty much the polar opposite of Kelly.
Schiano likes to run the ball first and is much more conservative than Kelly would have been.
Schiano's background includes time under Joe Paterno and he was the defensive coordinator at the University of Miami from 1999-200. He's been at Rutgers since 2001.
As a head coach, Schiano has compiled a 68-67 record and hasn't coached in the NFL since 1998.
While Schiano has carried a lot of respect over the years, it's not the big name or even NFL coordinator many Bucs fans had been hoping to see on the sidelines next season.
