Report: Gingrich To End Campaign May 1
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is set to officially end his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination May 1, according to CNN.
Additionally, Gingrich is ready to throw his weight behind the likely GOP nominee, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
It marks the end of a Gingrich campaign that could best be described as a phoenix constantly rising from the ashes.
He was left for dead months before the primaries began and then surged to the front as the Iowa caucuses began to start the primary season.
Gingrich surged ahead in South Carolina and won easily in the Palmetto State, but then he ran into major problems in Florida.
Facing a powerful and well-financed Romney campaign, Gingrich couldn't get a strong footing in Florida and Romney captured the winner-take-all Sunshine State GOP primary earlier this year. It marked the beginning of the end for Gingrich.
As time has gone on in the race, Romney has pulled away from everyone on the GOP side. After losing in five primaries Tuesday night, Gingrich's move to end his campaign was expected.
CNN reported that Gingrich will hold his final campaign event Tuesday in Washington, DC where he will make his official announcement surrounded by his family and supporters.
