Report: Fla. Base Pumps $5 Billion Into Economy
TAMPA, Fla. (CBS4)- A MacDill Air Force Base study said the military installation pumps nearly $5 billion into the Tampa economy every year.
The base, which is home to U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command, conducted the study between December 2010 and last month. The results were reported Friday by the Tampa Tribune.
The economic impact includes salaries for military and civilian personnel, local expenditures for goods and services, retiree payroll and indirect jobs linked the base. MacDill supports about 11,000 active duty military and civilian workers and more than 6,000 military reserve and National Guard members.
In addition, the Department of Defense says nearly 40,000 military retirees live within a 50-mile radius of the base.
