Report: Fins Settle On First Round Pick
MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) - According to NFL.com's Jason LaCanfora, the Miami Dolphins have settled on who they will pick with the 15th selection in the 2011 NFL Draft.
LaCanfora told CBSMiami.com news partner the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero that the Fins are going to pick Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
The stunning announcement from LaCanfora should be taken with a grain of salt because the one thing that everyone knows as the draft nears is that everyone knows nothing.
Kaepernick stands 6'4" and weighs in at 220 pounds. He also is the first quarterback to ever have three straight seasons of passing for 2,000 yards and rushing for at least 1,000 yards while in college. He threw for 82 touchdowns and just 24 interceptions during his college career.
Kaepernick would need at least a year of sitting on the bench before he could even be considered a starter in the NFL. He has a slight glitch in his throw like Tim Tebow, but his is not nearly as bad as Tebow's.
Still, at number 15 in the first round, it's a big stretch to draft Kaepernick. The Fins have more pressing needs and maybe they trade out of the first round completely to get more picks for this year and next year and still get Kaepernick.
When the Fins come on the clock, a few things will determine who the team picks. First, it will be the concern for job security by Tony Sparano and Jeff Ireland. Second, it will be whether the team wants immediate impact or to plan for the future. Finally, it will be what position needs the most help.
