Report: Fins Interested In Titans Tight End Jared Cook
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Lost in the hubbub surrounding the Miami Dolphins' pursuit of wide receiver Mike Wallace is the team's need for a quality tight end to give quarterback Ryan Tannehill a viable option in the middle of the field.
The Dolphins have relied on tight end Anthony Fasano for the last few seasons. Fasano, a quality blocker and decent pass catcher, didn't exactly frighten opponents with his play in the passing game. Fasano will become a free agent Tuesday at 4 p.m.
That leaves the Fins with a massive void at tight end and no viable options on the roster to fill it.
Not surprisingly, the Dolphins are reportedly very interested in former Tennessee Titans tight end Jared Cook, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
The 6'5", 250 pound tight end out of South Carolina caught 44 passes for 523 yards and four touchdowns on a bad Tennessee Titans offense in 2012. Cook caught 49 passes for 759 yards and 3 touchdowns in 2011.
For comparative purposes, Fasano caught 41 passes for 332 yards and five touchdowns in 2012 and 32 passes for 451 yards and 5 touchdowns in 2011. Cook may not be as good of a blocker, but he's a superior receiver who could give defenses matchup nightmares.
Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill may go from having no one to throw to besides Brian Hartline last year to having Mike Wallace, Hartline, Davone Bess, and Jared Cook plus any other rookies the Fins draft at his disposal in 2013.
