Report: Cristobal Interviewing At Alabama
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – University of Miami Hurricanes assistant football coach Mario Cristobal is in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and was expected to interview for the Crimson Tide's vacant offensive line coaching position, according to a report from 247sports.com (subscription required).
Cristobal has only been back with the University of Miami for a short time after a stunning firing by Florida International University athletic director Pete Garcia. UM head coach Al Golden brought Cristobal onto his staff to be an associated head coach/tight ends coach.
If Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide are able to bring Cristobal to Tuscaloosa, it could cause a seismic shift in South Florida recruiting. Not that Alabama has many problems with recruiting, but Cristobal is as dialed in with South Florida high schools as anyone and would give the Tide a big time advantage.
Not only that, but he's a heckuva head coach too. Cristobal may have only compiled a 27-47 record as head coach at FIU, but he also built a program at the school from scratch while dealing with crippling NCAA sanctions, and got the school to its first two bowl games in school history.
If Cristobal lands at the University of Alabama, it would be the proverbial worst to first story for the coach. He would be going from one of the most poorly run athletic departments in the country at FIU to arguably the top football program in the nation in Tuscaloosa.
