Report: Bobby Bowden Says Paterno Statue Should Come Down
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – In the wake of the damning Freeh Report about the Penn State sex abuse scandal and cover-up, former Florida State Seminoles head coach Bobby Bowden said a statue of Joe Paterno at Penn State should be removed.
"Every time somebody walks by and sees that statue; they're not going to remember the 80 good years," Bowden told the Altoona Mirror. "They're going to remember this thing with Sandusky. And I say for Joe's sake, for the family's sake, I would remove that statue."
Bowden told the Mirror he was shocked to read the details in the Freeh report and said it wasn't the man he knew and looked up to. Bowden said he had hoped the facts would have shown Paterno wasn't aware of the allegations against Sandusky, according to the Mirror.
"It looks like the facts are different, and I'm just sorry that he and his family have to go through this," Bowden told the Mirror. "But let me say this: That's not as sorry as I am for those young men that for 10 years go sexually abused when it could have been stopped."
