Remaining FAMU Hazing Defendants To Attend Hearing
ORLANDO (CBSMiami/AP) – Ten remaining defendants who were charged in the hazing death of Robert Champion, a former drum major at FAMU, are set to attend a status hearing Friday on their cases.
The hearing could determine when the pending trials will begin. Prosecutors last month added manslaughter and felony hazing charges to a new defendant last month.
Champion, who's from Decatur, Ga., collapsed and died in November 2011 after walking down a gauntlet of other band members who beat him with fists and instruments on a bus parked outside an Orlando hotel following a football game.
Five previous defendants have taken plea deals that ended in probation and community service sentences for what the state says were minimal roles. Prosecutors are expected to seek jail time for those still charged.
