Record Breaking Weekend For iPhone Sales
MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Apple announced Monday it sold 9-million of its newest iPhones since the devices hit stores Friday.
The tech giant says the low cost 5C and the top of the line 5S gave the company its strongest iPhone launch ever. When the iPhone 5 went on sale last year, it sold about 5-million the first three days.
However, China didn't get the new iPhone 5 last year until December and in 2012, Apple only unveiled one new kind of phone instead of two.
Apple says demand for the iPhone 5S has exceeded the initial supply, and many online orders are scheduled to be shipped in the coming weeks.
In addition, Apple claims that more than 200 million devices upgraded to the new iOS 7, the operating system driving iPhones and iPads.
The gold iPhone 5S is a big hit but it's sold out virtually everywhere.
Also, one of the big new features on the 5S has been Touch ID, a fingerprint sensor for user security. But it only took a couple of days for hackers to claim having cracked the system.
Users may also find something lacking compared with last year's model: They could break more easily.
SquareTrade, a provider of protection plans for gadgets, tested the new iPhones to see if they could withstand drops, dunks and other common hazards. Its finding: The latest models aren't as durable as last year's iPhone5.
With every upgrade Apple has made, the latest model has usually been more durable than the previous one, based on drop tests SquareTrade has done over the past few years, but that wasn't the case this time.
