Randy Shannon Files Suit Against UM
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Randy Shannon era at the University of Miami is long gone, but Shannon and UM are back in the spotlight again after the former coach filed suit against UM for allegedly firing him "without cause."
According to the lawsuit, Shannon was under contract through January 31, 2014 and that if the school fired him without cause before its expiration date, "Shannon will nevertheless be paid by the University a sum equal to the formula."
The exact details weren't made public because of confidentiality of the financial terms of his contract, according to the lawsuit.
In the lawsuit, Shannon said UM acknowledged an obligation to pay the fixed sum in the employment agreement, but wants the money prorated. According to the suit, UM only wants to pay roughly 5/6th of the amount that's guaranteed since he was fired in year 1 of his contract.
The suit claimed UM reduced the monthly payments calling it "amount overpaid." Shannon's suit said the proration was a breach of contract and that UM has "improperly denied, and continues to deny Shannon a portion of his wages under the employment agreements."
In addition, Shannon's suit claimed that even though he guided the team to a Sun Bowl berth, he did not get paid the additional compensation he normally would have earned for the game. UM fired Shannon before the Sun Bowl and didn't pay him for the bid.
Shannon's suit said the contract said he would get paid regardless of whether he remained employed bt UM and that the school has failed to pay him his bowl bonus.
