Rallies, Marches For Teen Who Died After Being "Shocked" By Police
MIAMI (CBSMiami) — A series of rallies, art exhibits and concerts will be held in the memory of a South Florida teen who died after he was shocked with a stun gun by Miami Beach Police.
Friends of Israel Hernandez-Llach plan to march along Miami Beach's Lincoln Road on Sunday to demand disciplinary actions for the officer involved. A poetry slam and fundraiser will be held Monday in Miami's Wynwood arts district.
Hernandez-Llach was a graffiti artist known as "Reefa." In August, police said they spotted him spray-painting a shuttered fast food restaurant. He allegedly led police on a chase and ignored orders to stop. Police said he was shocked with a Taser once in the chest, then showed signs of distress.
Hernandez-Llach was taken to a hospital, where he died. His family has sued the city and its police chief.
