Rainy Weekend Possible Across South Florida
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – South Florida woke up to a mostly dry morning, but the weekend will see another round storm due to a front on its way to the area.
Friday afternoon will be warm, steamy, and breezy, if not downright windy at times. Southeasterly winds will be sustained from 14-18 miles per hour with gusts up to 25 mph. That will lead to a risk of rip current at the beach and rough boating conditions.
Due to this onshore flow, a few showers may blow in on the breeze and this afternoon isolated thunderstorms may develop well inland.
A cold front will move into the Florida panhandle later today then continue to track southeast into North Central Florida on Saturday and stall out over South Florida through Sunday. This frontal boundary has led to a very active weather pattern for much of the U.S. this past week.
But, the cold air behind it will not make it to South Florida. Instead, the front will bring plenty of moist, unstable air and we will see the clouds increase and storms around Saturday into Sunday.
Most of the forecast models have been in agreement that the front will be draped across or near the area through the weekend. Lows will remain in the low 70's and highs in the low 80's.
Some of the storms on Sunday could turn strong with a slight chance of severe weather with the primary threat being the potential for gusty winds and small hail. The average start of the rainy season is May 20th. Last year our rainy season started earlier than normal on May 7th.
This weekend South Florida may start to get a taste of the wet season in South Florida. Lingering moisture will lead to some showers and storms Monday. Drier air arrives Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
