Rafael Strengthens Into A Hurricane, Forecast To Take Northerly Turn
MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Swirling to northwest across the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Rafael became a hurricane Monday night.
At 11 p.m., the center of the storm was about 500 miles south of Bermuda. Rafael had top sustained winds of 85 mph and was moving north at 10 mph.
Rafael is forecast to take a turn to the northeast on Tuesday. The National Hurricane Center said on their forecast track, Rafael will remain well east of the Bahamas and will approach Bermuda by late Tuesday.
A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Bermuda. Tropical storm winds are forecast to reach Bermuda Tuesday evening.
Rafael is expected to produce total rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches, with isolated totals of 12 inches, over the northern Leeward Islands.
