Pup Loses Life After Being Saved From House Fire

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A puppy that was fighting for her life after being rescued from a Fort Lauderdale house fire has died.
The 9-month old pit bull puppy named - Sweet Pea - was suffering from burn injuries to over 75 percent of her body.
On Thursday, doctors from Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists contacted Sweet Pea's owner Jason Hall letting him know she had taken a turn for the worse. That's when a decision was made to end her suffering.
"Words can't describe the sadness our team is feeling this morning," said Dr. Ira Zaslow, founder of Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists."Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Hall, and Sweet Pea will certainly hold a special place in all of our hearts."
Good Samaritans rescued Sweet Pea from a fire Monday near the 1800 block of Southwest 22nd Street. But it was too late for her parents Jasmine and Popeye who didn't make it out.
Veterinary officials said Sweet Pea's case demonstrated the generosity and kindness of the South Florida community. Hundreds helped raise money for the pup's treatment.
"I'm extremely grateful to the community for coming together to donate funds to try to help Sweet Pea and the team that tried to save her," said Hall.
Funds leftover from the donations made for Sweet Pea will be put into the Pet's Tree of Hope Fund, a non-profit organization that helps South Florida animals.
