Project Medishare Still Working Hard To Help Haiti

MIAMI (CBS4) - Project Medishare continues to work hard to help Haiti in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of January 2010.

"We've gone from CPR in the beginning to over 30 thousand critically ill patients to now where were continuing our critical care in the trauma hospital, fighting to get the funds to create infrastructure, something sustainable" explained the non-profit's founder and main surgeon, Dr. Barth Green of the University of Miami who described the scene after the quake as, "beyond belief, the human carnage, hundreds of thousands of dead and tens of thousands left with major challenges".

Unfortunately, over the past year, little has changed in Haiti.

"I'm a little depressed because I see things look the same as they did the day after the earthquake," Green said.

Recently, Project Medishare received $10 thousand from the Neighbors 4 Neighbors Help Haiti Fund.

"The money from Neighbors 4 Neighbors is going to be an amazing asset to us, because it allows us to serve more people," said Green.

Throughout the year, CBS4 viewers have donated more than $100 thousand to Help Haiti through Neighbors 4 Neighbors; months after the earthquake the money is still making a big difference.

"The average cost of a hospitalization for the average patient was about $250; it's about one percent equivalent of what it costs here in Miami. We're talking about touching not hundreds, but thousands of people with that amount of money," said Green.

Those on the front lines say the risk of not helping Haiti is greatest for the future generation.

"They'll just be waiting for the next tragedy and not be ready for it, and not be able to respond, and not be able to rock their kids in their arms when they're born, and say 'You know what, there's a future, our country has a future', we need to give them that," said Green.
