"Priscilla: Queen Of The Desert" Debuts At Arsht Center
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – With more than 500 spectacular Tony-Award-winning costumes, and dozens of disco favorites to sing along to,
"Priscilla: Queen of the Desert" is a fun and fabulous experience at the theater.
Based on the movie and the Broadway musical, the first national tour debuted this week at the Adrienne Arsht Center's South Florida stage. Wade McCollum plays Tick, and Joe Hart portrays Tick's friend Bob.
"It's like watching an incredible road trip with three really good friends who go on an incredible journey of discovery. It's kind of like a drag queen acid trip. A really good trip," joked McCollum.
There's also quite a show going on backstage:
"In every city we go, we hire 12 people. So there are 15 people total handling 20 actors. It's a lot of manpower just to make this show happen," said wardrobe supervisor Gillian Austin.
"It feels like a pit stop at a car race when I come off stage. I have 30 seconds to go from full boy to full girl or creature," McCollum explained. "There are three people around me giving me water, changing my pants, my wig, my makeup."
And then there's the music, with familiar disco songs like "Finally" and "It's Raining Men" among many others.
In the end, Priscilla will take audiences on a fun musical ride while teaching life lessons for us at the same time.
"It's about tolerance, acceptance and friendship," said Joe Hart.
