Prince Treated Like Royalty In South Florida

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – If you turned on your radio Thursday, you probably noticed South Florida's airways were very purple.
"People have really been pouring their hearts out," one station DJ said. "Prince always shared his life through his music, so I think there's a big void."
Fans are trying to fill that void with an outpouring of love and respect – shining a light on his musical genius.
The Miami Tower was lit up in a purple glow in Prince's honor.
The superstar has always had a local tie.
In the mid-90s he opened Glam Slam, a club on South Beach.
Known for his live performances, Prince saved some of his most memorable ones for South Florida.
There was his Easter Sunday show at the Orange Bowl in 1985, when he announced to 55,000 that his name was Prince and he'd come to play.
One fan told a reporter she had no problem celebrating Easter with Prince because his music was like prayer.
Then there was the 2007 Super Bowl, right here in Miami. When Prince heard there was rain in the forecast, he asked if organizers could make it rain harder.
And then he put on a show for the ages.
The FAMU marching band, the wind, the rain – all of it taking a rock anthem and elevating it to near mythical status.
