President & CEO of CBS Corporation Meets Next Generation of Broadcasters
CORAL GABLES (CBSMiami) -- Students at the University of Miami's School of Communication enjoyed a visit from one of the top executives in the media world, Leslie Moonves, the President and CEO of the CBS Corporation.
Moonves came to the Coral Gables campus to take part in a day of seminars and programs aimed at giving future broadcasters insight into the world they hope to join upon graduating.
Moonves said his belief that the future of the industry is bright, was confirmed by the students he talked to today.
"It's been terrific being here at the university," said Moonves. "The students are unbelievably smart. They're perceptive they know what's going on in the world. It's been a mixture of film students, journalism students. I'm frankly surprised how enlightened they are about technology and what's happening with the media."
Dean Gregory Shepherd said having Moonves at UM is good for the entire communications program.
"It's a fantastic experience for our students and faculty," Shepherd said, "to have someone of his stature. I don't want to use a cliché, but seriously, he is a giant in the industry."
As President and CEO of the CBS Corporation, Leslie Moonves oversees a global business creating news, sports and entertainment content for people all over the world. CBS Corporation is the parent company of CBSMiami.com and WFOR, CBS4 Miami.
Students got to ask him about the future of the broadcasting business, and even how to get that first job.
Student Michael Davis said he took to heart Moonves' advice to simply go get a foot in the door somewhere.
"A lot of times, when you meet someone of this caliber, they never tell you exactly what you have to do, so when they say it like that, you know it's important," Davis said.
Moonves' afternoon seminar was interrupted by members of the UM Marching Band, who played their instruments into the room, bringing a heavy dose of Hurricane pride. Moonves clapped to the rousing music and seemed to genuinely enjoy his time on the Miami campus. He said he always enjoys his visits here.
"Seeing the progress that's being made in South Florida and the changes here," Moonves said. "It's a great place to come visit and live, I know that. I have a lot of friends here and it's a great place. This is a part of the country that's exploding, that's moving forward in a big way. And it's going to play a big role in America in the future."
