Poll: Obama, Romney In Virtual Tie In Florida

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – With just about six weeks to go until the November elections, President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney are neck in neck when it comes to winning Florida.

According to a Miami Herald/El Nuevo Herald/Tampa Bay Times sponsored poll, Obama drew 48 percent support to Romney's 47 percent among likely voters, according to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald. Four percent of those surveyed said they were undecided.

When it came to who was more trustworthy it was a toss up, according to the Mason-Dixon Polling & Research survey. More than half, 51 percent, said they were not better off than they were four years ago while 41 percent said they were better off. When it came to the issue of Medicare, a traditional Democratic strength, Romney and President Obama's numbers were nearly even.

While Mr. Obama scores well when it comes to the Hispanic vote supporters say it may not be enough to overcome the support white voters who favor Romney by double digits.

The poll found when it came to independent voters, Mr. Obama had an 11 point edge over Romney. Independent voters could shift the vote either way in a swing state like Florida.

Each candidate has strong support from his respective party, although Romney has slightly more Republican backing compared to the percentage of Democrats favoring Obama.
