72-Year Old Postal Clerk Hit While Crossing Coral Gables Street

CORAL GABLES (CBSMiami) -- A 72-year old postal clerk is in the hospital after he was hit by a car while he was headed to work in Coral Gables on Friday.
The victim had just put in his notice to retire at the end of the year after being with the U.S. Postal Service for 41 years.
Coral Gables Police said the man was crossing Andalusia Avenue near Salzedo Street just after 8:00 a.m.

Meantime, police said, a silver Jeep 4-door was attempting to parallel park. While backing into the spot, the female driver ran him over twice, according to witnesses.
Another witness, Fabian Darrisso, said the woman didn't realize the man was there, and ran him over a second time when she put the car in drive.
Other witnesses said they heard a woman's panicked screams then saw a man lying on the street bleeding from his head.
"Police cars, blood," said witness Alessandro Colitto. "People need to be more careful."
Officers said the driver stayed on the scene and cooperated with authorities.
"This traffic crash was not a hit and run the person that was involved in the crash is cooperating. It's still an open investigation," said Coral Gables Officer Lauren Poole.
The victim suffered serious head trauma and was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.
Fellow employees said the postal clerk is a sweet man and a hard worker. They said the clerk normally parks across the street from the post office where he works and walks over.
No word yet on his condition.
The driver is not facing charges at this time.
