Redesigned Pompano Golf Course Opens Wednesday

POMPANO (CBSMiami) – Beginning this Wednesday, Broward County golfers will be to tee off on the redesigned Pine's Golf Course in Pompano Beach.

After being closed since April of 2012, owners of the course believe that the $4 million makeover course will be a big hit.

The 18-hole course was reworked by Greg Norman Golf Course Design, which has redesigned 76 beautiful courses around the world since 1987.

Norman has revamped courses in places like Dubai, Australia and South Africa.

"I wouldn't be here today if I didn't have access to public facilities," Norman, 57, told the Sun-Sentinel at the groundbreaking ceremony on the course last April. "This is the heartbeat of golf right here."

Norman has won 20 U.S. PGA Tour titles throughout the 1970s, '80s and '90s. He was also the husband of tennis player Chris Evert of Fort Lauderdale.

The course now features new Celebration Bermuda turf and irrigation. According to the golf course's manager Greg Martzolf, these improvements should keep the course playable and reduce maintenance costs.

The course, located at 1101 North Federal Highway, is said to be more "appealing to the eye," Martzoff told the paper.

Prices at the course vary between $25 to $65 depending on the time of year, the time of day and whether you rent a cart.

Chris Campbell, senior vice president of Norman's company, told the paper they took advantage of the previous course layout and "made the best shape they could," which means players will benefit from the more playable and enjoyable routing.

Although the course has already been open to the public, Wednesday marks the big grand opening.
