Polo Mogul Goodman Sentenced To 16 Years

PALM BEACH (CBSMiami) - Wellington polo mogul John Goodman has been sentenced to more than a dozen years in prison for a deadly DUI car accident which claimed the life of 23-year old Scott Patrick Wilson four years ago.

Last October, a jury found Goodman guilty of DUI manslaughter, failure to render aid, in Wilson's death. This was the second jury to find him guilty.

Goodman was granted a re-trial after his lawyers complained to the judge about possible jury bias during his first trial.

During a hearing Friday, Palm Beach County Chief Circuit Judge Jeffrey Colbath sentenced him to 16 years in prison, according to The Sun-Sentinel. It was the same sentence given the first time Goodman was found guilty. The judge also said that he would not allow Goodman to be released on bond while he appeals this latest convicton.

Prosecutors says Goodman was drunk when his Bentley slammed into Wilson's car in February, 2010.

The force of the crash pushed the car into the canal where Wilson drowned. A blood sample taken nearly three hours after the crash showed Goodman had a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit.

Investigators said Goodman left the scene and waited nearly one hour before calling 911.

Goodman's defense argued that he was not drunk at the time of the crash. The attorneys said Goodman's high blood alcohol level was the result of the drinking he did after the crash. During the trial, Goodman testified that he didn't know Wilson's car had ended up in the canal. He said if he had knows that, he would have gone to help.

Goodman's attorneys requested a third trial, but Colbath said no. They have said they will appeal.
