Poll: Romney Opens 1 Point Lead Over Obama In Fla.
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The latest poll from Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling finds Republican Mitt Romney has taken a one point lead in Florida over President Barack Obama one week after a weak debate performance from the president.
The lead, which is well within the poll's margin of error of +/- 3.4%, is a five-point shift for Romney after the debate. The shift has been mainly among independent voters who shifted by roughly 10 points to give Romney the lead.
Also for the first time in the poll, voters gave Romney a positive favorability rating equal to the president. White voters also shifted by six points to Romney, giving him a 57-40 percent lead in Florida.
"The race in Florida's about as close as it could be right now," said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. "Mitt Romney has the momentum after his strong debate performance last week, but Barack Obama's still very much in it."
Romney's gains aren't translating to races further down the ballot though. Senator Bill Nelson continues to lead Representative Connie Mack by 8 points in this poll and by upwards of 10 points in other polls. Nelson is also receiving good crossover support, winning 17 percent of the Republican vote.
