Poll: Obama Struggling With Florida Voters
MIAMI (CBS4) - If President Barack Obama wants to win Florida's 29 electoral votes next year, he has quite a bit of work to do, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday morning.
According to the poll, 44 percent approve of President Obama's job performance with 52 percent disapproving. But, only 42 percent favored Obama for a second term, while 51 percent did not.
Still, the president is personally very popular amongst Floridians. Seventy percent of voters like Obama personally, including thirty percent of those who disagree with his policies.
Obama would be in a dead-heat with an unnamed Republican challenger if the election were held today.
Democratic Senator Bill Nelson had much better numbers across the state. Forty-seven percent approve of Senator Nelson's job performance, while only 26 percent disapprove. Forty-three percent said Nelson deserves a third term.
When it came to specific issues, voters were evenly split at 46 percent on whether they support President Obama's handling of the situation in Libya.
In a "not in my backyard" moment, voters were evenly divided about building new nuclear plants in Florida, but they opposed building them in their community by a 56-39 margin.
Finally, 49 percent of voters said they would favor repealing the health care law passed by Congress last year, compared to 41 percent who opposed the repeal.
The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has estimated that a full repeal of the law will cost the country hundreds of billions of dollars.
